Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student - describes the morphological features of medicinal plants and selected medicinal materials; describes the anatomy and morphology of plants using microscopic preparations of medicinal materials; distinguishes the taxa of medicinal plants found in the immediate vicinity of man and in the botanical garden. Skills: Student - correctly carries out the microscopic observations in the biological laboratory and in the botanical garden. He or she interprets and discusses the results and formulates the appropriate conclusions, using the scientific terminology in the field of biology. He or she efficiently and safely uses the microscope hardware entrusted; determinates the plant genus or species based on morphology, using the determination keys for medicinal material; is prepared to use the properties of medicinal plants through acquired knowledge about their features, by which he or she may determinate the medicinal plant species using determination keys.

Competences: The student is aware of the effects of group work and able to interact and work in a group, playing a variety of roles in it; becomes a sensitive for a nature as a set of cognitive, aesthetic, educational, economic and touristic values , and is aware of the importance of environmental biodiversity; demonstrates a responsibility and care of the laboratory equipment and natural collections entrusted.

Prerequisites: -

Course content: Overview of medicinal materials (medicinal properties, indications and contraindications to the use of herbal medicines, groups of chemical substances and directions of their activity on the human body). Collection methods of different plant materials. Characteristics of selected herbal medicines commonly used in Poland (content, the effects of the individual components, usage, dosage). Determination/identification of medicinal plants. Protected medicinal plants occurring in Poland.

Assessment methods: Students who passed the exercises are obliged to write the test covered the material presented during the lecture (open-ended questions and to be chosen). The test lasts approx. 30 min. If the test is not passed in the first term, the student is entitled to re-attempt to pass it in writing in the second period.
