Learning outcomes: During the course the student get theoretical and practical knowledge on the basic processes responsible for the functioning of plant cell and of plant organisms. He knows how to handle different methods used in researching physiological processes occuring in plants.

Competences: Knowledge in the realm of plant physiology (theory and practice) obtained during the lectures and classes is necessary for further studies of such subjects as agriculture and related sciences. Passing the course permits conducting simple examination of physiological processes of plants. Effective collaboration in a team. Solving problems in creative ways.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of the selected topics of chemistry, biochemistry and biology

Course content: Lectures: The water in plant life: the special properties of water, diffusion, osmosis, membrane permeability for different substances, water potential. Uptake and transport of water - the importance of water for plants, the mechanism of absorption of water (transport active and passive). Secretion of water by plants - transpiration, the types of transpiration, stomatal function, gutation. Mineral nutrition of plants - physiological functions of macro-and micronutrients, deficiency symptoms. Factors affecting the collection of mineral salts. Photosynthesis - the importance of photosynthesis, photosynthetic pigments, mechanism of photosynthesis - the light reaction and dark reaction, carbon path in photosynthesis, C3, C4, CAM. Photorespiration. Growth regulators - the mechanism of action, auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene, abscisic acid. Dormancy and germination - mechanism of dormancy, seed dormancy triggers, the mechanism of dormancy, physiology and biochemistry of seeds in the germination process. Plant groth and development. Practical Course: Water cell. Plasma membrane permeability. Mineral nutrition of plants. Respiration of seeds. Pigments of chloroplasts. Photosynthesis.
