Learning outcomes: Student get knowledge about chemical structures, properties and utility of main chemical compound with plant-origin. Methods of isolations, connections between chemical structures and pharmacological properties are presented. Chemical composition of main pharmacognostic materials and spices are introduced. Students get acquainted with most important structure – elucidation analyses e.g. GC, GC-MS, NMR.

Competences: Student should know the possibilities of obtaining, analysis and utilities of main pharmacognostic sources. Should determine biological properties of selected compounds, especially with influence on human body. Student is able to describe a properties of natural compounds as a dietary supplements and parapharmaceuticals.

Prerequisites: Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry

Course content: Natural compounds: classification, occurrence and utilities. Methods of natural products isolation. Shikimic acid derivatives – phenylopropanoids and tannins. Antocyanes and flavones – occurrence in nature and biological properties. Phenolic compounds – quinines and coumarines. Sulfur containing compounds and cyanogenic glycosides. Alkaloids: classification, structures and using in medicine. Modern natural plant protected compounds. Pheromones – classification and utilities. Herbs used as spice – utilities and chemical composition of most important essential oils. Natutal compounds in daily using compounds. Natural compound applied in industry. Methods of natural products isolation.

Assessment methods: Oral exam, minimal level of knowledge required to pass the course is 60%.
