Learning outcomes: Student acquires skills in surveying studies - maps, aerial photographs and satellite imagery. Is able to measure on the map and calculate the appropriate data. Acquires the skills to develop thematic maps with available mapping methodologies. Able to use GIS - in the tasks associated with the natural environment.

Competences: Completion of the course enables student to work in businesses and government entities that have geographic information systems - can create thematic maps, perform work for which it is necessary handling and use of maps at different levels of planning and design of investment.

Prerequisites: Mathematics

Course content: The role and tasks of surveying in land management and environmental protection. Mapping and geodetic coordinate systems used in Poland, characterization of basic maps, topographic, widegeographic, orthophotomaps. Geodesic warp in Poland. Measurement methods of situational details. Institutions of geodetic – cartographic information. Principles of using surveying resources. Rules and methods for calculating the surface. Relieves. Landforms. Methods of measurement of the terrain. Slopes. Visualization of quantitative data. Computer programs and their ability to provide data. Thematic maps. Characteristics of spatial phenomena. Cartographic presentation methods used to present data on maps. Aggregation of data: class divisions, ways of classes structuring. Selection of methods for mapping depending on the purpose and use of maps and the type of data. Geographic Information Systems. National systems - data about the environment in Poland. Characteristics of the MapInfo program - a computerized information system. Sozological and hydrographic maps. Cartographic method of research. The use of cartographic methods in the study of the characteristics relationship and phenomena expressed in qualitative and quantitative scales. Digital cartography. Collection of data from state and departmental resources. Topographic Data Base - TBD, Lower Silesian Spatial Information System - DSIP
