Learning outcomes: Student understands the role of microbes in degradation of organic and mineral compounds in both water and soil. He knows the effect of external stimuli on development of these microorganisms. Moreover, he knows the manners of using the microbial activity in plant and environment protection. He knows effects of metabolites on formation of interrelationships among microbes and between plant and microorganisms. In addition, student knows the rules of sterile work with microbes. He is also able to use the microscope as well as to prepare the media and microscopic preparates.

Competences: Student understands the role of microbes in formation of soil fertility and in transformation of organic and mineral fertilizers. He is also aware of positive and negative effects of microorganisms on plant growth and food quality. Student knows the manners of using the saprophytic microbes in plant and environment protection, especially in soil reclamation and waste recycling. He knows commercial biopreparations, which are used in agronomy and environment protection

Prerequisites: biochemistry, biology and chemistry;

Course content: aerobic and anaerobic microbial metabolism; biosynthesis of secondary metabolites (antibiotics and mycotoxins); organic matter degradation; microbial transformation of nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur both in soil and water; plant – microbe interactions; microbial biotransformation of anthropogenic pollutions
