Learning outcomes: Students know the peat ecosystem; what types of peatbogs exist in Poland and in Europe; they learn the ways of their genesis. The most important plants of peatbogs the recognizing the type of peatbog basing on its plants. Students get the knowledge about the ways of researches of the history of peatbogs’ development. They learn how to use peatbogs and peat and how such using can be dangerous for the environment. They know the possibilities of renaturalization of different type of peatbogs. They know the difference between “peat” and “peatbog”.

Competences: The ability of correct estimate of soils (f.e. in a rural district), which helps to make the plans of regional spatial management. After this course student can manage and plan all the activities for the protection or reclamation of peat areas according the contemporary trends of environmental protection.

Prerequisites: Botany, soil science

Course content: Peat and peatbog. Types and ways of genesis of the peatbogs. The peatbogs’ plants. Recognizing of peat and peatbog according the plants. Elements of strtygrapfy and palinology. Economical use of peat and peatbogs. Land drainage and degradation of peatbogs. The ways of renaturalization different types of peatbogs. The protection of peat ecosystem.

Assessment methods: obligatory exam after 2 (9) semester
