Learning outcomes: The student after completion of the course should know the basic types of rocks used as building and decorative stone and be able to recognize their current status and to determine approximately the causes of the eventual destruction. He should also know what types of stone can be used for various applications in the open space and in the interiors. The methods of collection and workshop processing of basic types of the use stone should be also known, and places of their occurrence in Poland.

Course content: Introduction to the topics related to stone as a natural building material. Basic terms. General show the role of stone and its function in human life in historical perspective. Discussion of exogenous geological processes, as the motor power of the geomorphological and rock-forming changes. The closed cycle of geological processes and rock material circulation in nature. The origin of the rocks (called popularly stones), and their basic classification. Characteristics of the igneous rocks – the structural characteristics and physical properties. Characteristics of the sedimentary and metamorphosed rocks (metamorphic) - the structural characteristics and physical properties. Types of use stone and their use in construction and architecture. The occurrence of the use stone in Poland and their exploitation. Discussion of the preparation of stone for the building needs, with emphasis on the process of monoliths extracting, the production of smaller stone elements (plates), giving texture the surface and workshop treatment. The use of stone in architecture: (a) inside, (b) outside, (c) a stone in the garden. Natural processes of the stone destruction and the destruction of stone in the polluted urban atmosphere – the term deterioration and biodeterioration, their causes and methods of prevention. Chemistry for stone. Principles of design in stone (building project, workshop project, project of works organization, as-built project). Errors and failures resulting from the installation of stone cladding and their repair).
