Learning outcomes: Students gain ability to use and administrate GNU/linux operating system and its possible use in biology.
Competences: The completion of this course allows students for efficient use of GNU/linux operating system through command line, basic administration, how unix system works, programs and linux kernel compilation. Additionally the skills can be further used practically with using GNU/linux operating system as an environment for science analysis connected with genetics, bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics. This course is a good introduction to bioinformatics and other courses connected with informatics.
Prerequisites: elements of computer science
Course content: GNU/linux maintenance, use for scientific research
Recommended literature: Negus, C. (2007) Linux bible. Wiley Publishing, Inc.
Assessment methods: completion of the computer lab is based on grades, which are granted during the semester (minimum average grade to pass 2.51), completion of the lecture part requires the completion of the computer lab and of the exam (minimum 60% of knowledge required to pass).
