Learning outcomes: During the course, the student acquires knowledge on the structure and mechanisms of functioning of biological systems at the levels of populations, biocoenoses, ecosystems, landscapes and biosphere. The student is capable of determining relations between organisms and their environment and the role of humans in environmental processes. The student is able to apply ecological principles in environment protection and nature conservancy.

Competences: The course provides skills sufficient to carry out studies in ecology and work in the area of broadly understood environment protection and nature conservancy in ecological services and state administration.

Prerequisites: botany, zoology

Course content: Area and methods in ecology. Limiting factors. Population, biocoenosis, ecosystem, landscape – structure and functioning. Succession. Biodiversity and biological equilibrium. Population genetics. Climates, soils and biomes of the Earth. Biogeography. Circulation of matter and energy flow. Structure and productivity of land and water ecosystems.
