Course details
Course code: NBSS20170f11
Semester: 2011/2012 winter
Name: Biological Membranes - Structure and Function
Major: Biotechnology
Study Type: second cycle
Course type: optional
Study Semester: 2
ECTS points: 1
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 15 / 0 / 0
Lecturer: prof. dr hab. Janina Gabryjelska
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: The students acquire theoretical knowledge on the fundamentals of selected parts of biophysics, in particular the laws and principles necessary in explaining the formation and functioning of cell membranes that are exemplified by their model. Such approach is helpful in explaining life processes occurring in biological systems. Also, the student gains knowledge about the basics of physical methods used in study of model and biological membranes properties.

Competences: The knowledge acquired will enable a practical approach to problems related to the description of the construction and operation of biological systems and will help to understand the principles of operation of equipment used for the study of biological systems, and make it possible to undertake experiments and research work.

Prerequisites: physics, biology

Course content: Biophysical bases of self-organization, structure and functioning of biological membranes with the use of existing models, descriptions of these membranes, basic thermodynamic processes associated with transport of substance through biological and model membrane and a description of physical research methods used in cell membranology.
