Name: Immunology
Major: Biotechnology
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: optional
Study Semester: 7
ECTS points: 2
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 12 / 12 / 0
Lecturer: dr hab. Anna Chełmońska-Soyta
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: Students know and understand the mechanisms of innate and adaptive immunity, they have insight in application of biotechnological methods of recombinant antibody production, they know and are capable to perform laboratory tests based on antigen-antibody reaction; immunoprecypitation, immunofluorescence (flow cytometry) and immunoenzymatic (ELISA) methods. They know the principle mechanisms of gut immunity and are able to indicate the main groups of food allergens and main strategies of diminution of food allergnicity, they have an overview of the main goals of immunization and modern methods of vaccines production.

Competences: Students are able to choose the appropriate components, design and perform tests of antigen/antibody detection by immunological methods based on antigen-antibody reaction, they can indicate the markers of specific and unspecific immunity and the methods of their assessment useful in nutrition trials, they indicate the most important food allergens and their effects on human health and participate in food allergy management programs, they know basic rules of the development and assessment of new vaccines.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge on Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Genetics in Eukaryotes.

Course content: Cells and tissues of the immune system, molecules involved in antigen recognition, pattern recognition receptors and their ligands, antibodies (Ab): structure, functions, diversity of immunoglobulins, biotechnological methods of recombinant antibody production; monoclonal antibodies, phage display, transgenesis, antigens, antigen-antibody reactions, antigen presentation, major histocompatibilty complex, TCR and BCR receptors, lymphocyte activation, traffic and lymphocytes communication, cytokines, gut immunity, food allergy, good allergens, modulation of unspecific and specific immunity by food (probiotics, nutraceutics, nutrients), nutritional acquired immune deficiency, infectious immunity, active immunization, vaccines.

Recommended literature: Immunologia, red. Gołąb J., Jakóbisiak M., Lasek M., Stokłosa T, PWN, Warszawa 2007; Hand-outs from lectures and practical course.

Assessment methods: Passing grades of laboratory course and written exam
