Learning outcomes: Students know the aims and methods of using laboratory animals in research, knows the laws and welfare issues of lab.animals, , know the principles of hygiene issues and breeding demands of lab. animals, have main insight in anatomy and physiology, genetic background and diversity, methods of creating genetically modified organisms, are able to sample organs and tissues, know the main rules of experiments designing and is able to propose the alternative methods of assessment of biological processes without the use of lab.animals.

Competences: Students: know and understand the goals and restrictions in using of lab. animals for research and pre-clinical studies, can design the simple experiment with using lab.animals, have insight in the principal methods of genetic modification of the organisms, are able to prepare the application to ethical commission for laboratory animals

Prerequisites: Biochemistry, Genetics, Immunology

Course content: Basic knowledge in ethics and legislation of the use of animals in biomedical research, anatomy, physiology, reproduction and behavior of laboratory animals, biochemical and hematological markers in healthy animals, animal facilities- organization and hygiene, breeding and feed regiment, genetic diversity in mice and rats, transgenesis, transgenic animals and gene knockouts animals, examination of gene expression in vivo and ex vivo, immunological, pharmacological and toxicological tests and experiments designing, low vertebrates and non-vertebrates as laboratory animals, screening test “omics” type, cell and tissue culture as an alternative methods of experiments
