Course details
Course code: RSSS20138f12
Semester: 2012/2013 winter
Name: Heavy metals in the environment
Major: Environmental Protection
Study Type: second cycle
Course type: optional
Study Semester: 2
ECTS points: 3
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 15 / 30 / 0
Lecturer: Prof. dr hab. Anna Karczewska
Language of instruction: Polish / English

Learning outcomes: Student possesses theoretical and practical knowledge on heavy metals biogeochemistry, environmental migration, effects on living organisms, as well as assessment of environmental risk in the systems polluted with heavy metals.

Competences: Student understands the mechanisms governing transformation and migration of heavy metals in the environment. Therefore, he is able to predict metals fate in the environment, in relation to present conditions, and to prepare an assessment of environmental pollution and risk. He is able to prepare a project for reclamation of polluted land, and to perform analytical work aimed to measure metals concentrations and species in environmental samples.

Prerequisites: Geology, environmental chemistry, soil science

Course content: Sources of heavy metals in tne environment, factors of metals mobility and bioavailability, hyper-accumulation, biogeochemistry of some metals, analytical methods, risk assessment, reclamation of lands polluted with heavy metals, phytoremediation.
