Semester: 2011/2012 summer
Name: CONSERVATION OF ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES
Major: Animal Science
Study Type: second cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 1
ECTS points: 2
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 15 / 0 / 45
Lecturer: prof. dr hab. Andrzej Filistowicz
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: Student will posses knowledge how identify status of population (critical, threat, endanger, rare breed), how take samples from the starting population to complete herd or to collect in gene bank and realizing of breeding work, which decrease to minimum rate of inbred increase and loss of genetic variability.

Competences: After completing the course student will be able to start work connected with conservation of gene found (animal breeding in conservation herd, animal breeding in Zoo, conservation of biological material in gene banks).

Prerequisites: Animal physiology, genetics

Course content: The aim of the course is to familiarise students with basic aspects of conservation of animal genetic resources, especially rare species of domestic animals, sources of genetic variability (natural genetic resources and factors affecting genetic variability), conservation of natural genetic resources (preserved areas, protected species, role of zoological gardens, introduction and reintroduction of rare species), organisation of conservation of world and regional genetic resources, changes in small populations, systems of conservation of genetic resources (in situ and ex situ, ways of combining different methods), determination of structure and size of conserved genetic resources, biological and economic aspects of gene conservation, biological diversity of populations, methods of determination of genetic distance between populations (protein and other gene polymorphism, mini- and microsatellites), practical aspects of rare breeds protection in Poland and other countries.
