Learning outcomes: After course completion student knows legal, technical and biological aspects of landfills closure and restoration. He is able to choose proper materials and technologies for technical and biological design of landfill’s capping and restoration in particular local conditions. He can plan capping layers, prepare concepts of landfill gas recovery, drainage system, a form of landfill body and land use after closure.

Competences: After course completion student is able to prepare design concept of technical and biological MSW landfills’ capping and restoration. He knows law regulations and basic administrative procedures concerning landfill closure.

Prerequisites:

Course content: Definition of landfill closure, aims, scope and ways of capping and restoration. Problems of residual pollutions. Legal aspects of landfill closure. Materials used in landfill’s capping and restoration. Landfill capping. Slopes stability. Biotechnical protection against erosion. Geotechnical problems of landfill capping and restoration. Biological methods in restoration of brown and hard coal mining areas. Processing and winning of soils, using of wastes in landfills capping and restoration. Choosing and introducing of plants species. Succession stages. Pioneer plants. Bio indicators. Cultivation and maintenance of areas. Monitoring.
