Learning outcomes: Students during the course gain knowledge about the role of microbes in transformation of organic and mineral compounds in environment. Particularly, they learn about the effect of external factors on development of microbes and affecting the interrelationships between pathogenic and saprophytic microbes. Moreover, they learn about the influence of microbes on food and fodder quality. In addition, students are able perform basic microbial tests and prepare media

Competences: The positive credit of this course secures the basics for work with microorganisms. Student can plan the simple experiments to count the number of different group of microorganisms in soil, water, food and in air. Moreover, students know disinfection manners. They are aware of positive and negative effect of microorganisms on food and fodder quality and on health of plant crops and animals

Prerequisites: biochemistry, biology, botany and chemistry

Course content: prions and viruses; background of bacterial systematic; effects of environmental factors on growth and metabolism of microbes; aerobic and anaerobic microbial metabolism; microbiological processes in food industry; role and action of secondary metabolites (antibiotics, mycotoxins); microbiological transformation of nitrogen and sulfur ,
