Learning outcomes: Student is familiar with basic biotechnological and microbiological techniques. He has also insight in the molecular and environmental regulations of microbial metabolites overproduction. He knows the possibilities of the use of biological material in industry, food, medicine and environmental protection.
Competences: Student has insight in biological and technical background of different microbial biotechnologies and can adapt this knowledge to design a new bioprocesses.
Prerequisites: cell biology, biochemistry, general microbiology
Course content: Industrial microorganisms – strain isolation and screening, biotechnological improvement (mutagenesis and DNA recombination in vivo and in vitro) and long-term preservation. Bioreactors and cultivation systems. Overview of industrial microbial synthesis (production of organic acids, amino acids, polysaccharides, enzymes, antybiotyków i heterologicznych białek). Biological and technological aspects of fermented food production (fermented milks, probiotics, sausages, wines). Application of microorganisms in remediation of environmental wastes.
