Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 – can identify and characterize animal tissues [KB2_W05]; W2 – can recognize and differentiate animal tissues on histological preparations [KB2_W02_BT]; W3 – can choose tools needed for visualization of particular biological structures [KB2_W03_BT]; Skills: Student: U1 – can use light microscope and make observations of histological preparations [KB2_U01]; U2 – can choose and decide about the most suitable research methods needs for resolving particular research problem [KB2_U02; KB2_U07_BT; KB2_U08_BT];

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): Student: K1 – plans tasks and chooses methods for animal tissue isolation [KB2_K03]; K2 – shows ethical attitudes for experimental animals [KB2_K06]; K3 – understands the importance of the BHP rules compliance due to contact with animal-derived material and harmful factors in laboratory, shows responsibility for entrusted preparations and microscopes [K_K07].

Prerequisites: histology, cell biology, biophysisc

Course content: Transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Types of light microscopes. Types of microscopy preparations. Fixation and staining techniques. Autoradiography. Types of cyto- and histochemical reactions. In situ hybridization. Fluorescence microscopy. Hardware and software picture analysis tools.

Assessment methods: Tutorial credit: checking the skills for making micrographs using light and electron microscopy, evaluation of mastery in work with microscopes, written examinations on grade, obligatory presence, one absence without excuse in case witch student must credit proper part of material, tutorial credit on the basis of grades’ average. Course credit: students are obligated to write test from lecture material. Final grade is based on lecture and tutorial grades average.
