Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 – knows material culture of ancient and medieval societies in Europe and the area of Poland [KB2_W05_BC, KB2_W07_BC]; W2 – understands the diversity of burials in time in different parts of Europe, due to religion and ideology which obligated in those societies [KB2_W01_BC]; W3 – understands agricultural knowledge and technology of processing organic resources (leather, wood, bone and antler) adapted in prehistoric times [KB2_W07_BC]. Skills: Student: U1 – is able to identify different categories of artifacts uncovered during archaeological excavation and qualify their relative and absolute chronology [KB2_U04, KB2_U10]; U2 – can prepare multimedia presentations concerned different aspects of archaeological research dedicated to prehistory and early middle ages in Central Europe, especially concerned with occurrence of burials of these societies inhabited this region [KB2_U05].

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): Student: K1 - can work effectively in a team (preparation of a multimedia presentation on selected aspects of the archeology of Central Europe) [KB2_K02]; K2 - works with academic institutions and students, especially in the protection of archaeological sites [KB2_K08].

Course content: anthropogenesis and the oldest Palaeolithic cultures; the Lower, Middle and Upper Palaeolithic in Europe; Human societies at the turn of the Pleistocene and the Holocene (the Final Palaeolithic, Mesolithic); Younger Stone Age (the Neolithic) – agricultural subsistence; Burial rites in the Stone Age in the Polish lands; Archaeological cultures of the Bronze Age and early Iron Age (economy and burial customs); the Le Tene and Roman period in the Polish lands; Geography of Slavonic tribes; from cremation to inhumation (Slavonic burials in the early Middle Ages). Established learning outcomes are achieved through direct contact with the archaeological sites (collections of the Archaeological Museum in Wroclaw and the Institute of Archaeology, University of Wrocław).

Assessment methods: Assessment exercise: regular (every 2-3 weeks) written tests to assess the current rating (based on oral statements) progress and activity. The presence of the exercises is compulsory, the student may have only one unauthorized absence. Completion of exercises based on the average ratings. Completion of the course: students with credited exercises have to pass an additional written exam (40-50 open questions, partly of problematic).
