Learning outcomes: Knowledge Student lists and describes the potential use of non-conventional microorganisms to ethanol production; indicates disposal methods for obtaining bioethanol from waste materials with using microorganisms other than Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast, explains the basis of improving microorganisms. Skills Student evaluates the usefulness of non-conventional microorganisms in ethanol production; analyzes the advantages of using an amylolytic yeast in the starch fermentation process, as well as genetically modified organisms in the production of ethanol from starch, lactose and xylose.

Competences: Student demonstrates determination in acquiring knowledge about the possibility of using non-conventional microbes in ethanol production; express their opinions and confronts them with the opinion of the team; is open to take part in discussion in the group; evaluates colleagues opinions, with the proceeds of ethics.

Prerequisites: Biochemistry, Microbiology, Fermentation Technology

Course content: Bacteria as producers of the ethanol. Micro-organisms different from Saccharomyces cerevisiae for ethanol production from starch raw materials. Selected aspects of hydrolysis and fermentation of starch raw materials with the participation of amylolitic yeast. Using lactose fermenting yeast for ethanol production of whey. Xylose fermenting micro-organisms. Genetic modified micro-organisms as ethanol producers in starch, lactose and xylose media. Applying co-cultures of micro-organisms in ethanol fermentation processes.
