Semester: 2012/2013 summer
Name: Geology
Major: Civil Engineering
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 2
ECTS points: 3
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 30 / 15 / 0
Lecturer: prof. dr hab. inż. Alicja Czamara
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: Student knows bases of geology; knows how to recognize basic minerals and rocks; is able to characterize the geological formation on the basis of the geologic maps and the cross-sections.

Competences: After completion of the course student is able to: determine lithology and stratigraphy of the ground, understand geologic processes which form the soils and which influence on their properties.; can use obtained knowledge to assess the initial foundation conditions for chosen constructions on the ground, using the information from geologic elaboration (documentation) and from thematic maps and from relative cross-sections.

Prerequisites: chosen parts of the geodesy

Course content: Divisions of geology (basic and applied sciences). Bases of the dynamic geology. Earth structure. Endogenic, egzogenic and anthropogenic processes. Bases of the historic geology, stratigraphy. The geological formation of Poland. Rocks of the earth’s crust as the foundation ground. Physical and chemical properties of clay minerals. Bases of the hydrogeology. Conditions of ground water occurrence and their classification. Physical and chemical properties of ground waters. The affect of aggressive ground water on foundations. Geologic maps. Engineering-geological characteristic of grounds (soils). Elements of the geologic law.
