Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 – knows the backgrounds of systematic and classification of selected groups of Protista and of invertebrate animals, knows their origin, structure, biology and importance [BH1_W01, BH1_W11]; W2 – describes the external and internal morphology of animals [BH1_W01]; W3 – understands the increasing complexity of animal structure, resulting from the sequence of evolutionary events [BH1_W01, BH1_W10, BH1_W11]; W4 – possesses the general knowledge of life function of representatives of the kingdoms Protista and Animalia and of relations between the different groups of heterotrophs [BH1_W01, BH1_W11]; W5 – knows the phylogenetic relationship between the major taxa of Animalia [BH1_W01, BH1_W11]; W6 – knows the regulations concerning the protection of animals in Poland; knows the methods of collecting, preservation, storing and labeling of invertebrates [BH1_W16, BH1_W18]; W7 – describes the taxa of economic importance (pests, parasites, invertebrates applied in biological control and used in food industry) [BH1_W17, BH1_W18]. Skills: Student: U1 – operates the light- and stereomicroscopes; safely deals with the preserved material (invertebrate animals) [BH1_U04]; U2 – identifies the representatives of particular classes of animals and – in case of native fauna – the representatives of orders (or lower taxonomic categories, as far as protected taxa and taxa of economic importance are concerned); applies the interactive keys in taxa identification [BH1_U0,3, BH1_U04]; U3 – can select the adequate study techniques (methods of collecting, preservation, dissection, observation and identification) applied in relation to various group of organisms [BH1_U09].

Competences: Student: K1 – understands the increasing complexity of animal architecture, being in concordance with the evolutionary process, correctly identifies and solves the problems related to animal breeding [BH1_K05]; K2 – is aware of the collective responsibility for fulfilling the tasks assigned to the team [BH1_K02]; K3 – takes care for the equipment he/she was entrusted with; takes responsibility for animal safety and protection [BH1_K04].

Prerequisites:

Course content: General characteristics of unicellular organisms (Protista) and of animals (Animalia), origin of animals, living environment; basic of classification, systematics and phylogeny; structure and functions of heterotrophic organisms; life cycles; ontogeny and phylogeny; origin of major groups of Metazoa; systematic review; pests and parasites; invertebrates applied in biological control and in food industry; methods applied in the forensic entomology and acarology; methods of collecting of animals, review of the Polish fauna, regulations concerning the animal protection in Poland.

Assessment methods: Grade component – practicals: at nine practicals – short tests scored in points (grade points available – 4 per test at maximum); during the semester three large tests (grade points available – 16 per test at maximum) containing the topics included in lectures and practicals. Obligatory attendance in practicals. In case of absence (followed by an excuse note) – the need for passing the adequate part of material. Grade level depends on the number of points earned.
