Learning outcomes: After completing the course students understand the need for structuring data and what is the role of a database in such process. They are able to use the standard system tools and utilities to provide a structure for a simple data collections. Students know the conceptual design of relational databases and can design a database in accordance with their requirements. They are able to use the SQL language to retrieve data from an existing bioinformatic databases and use them in further analysis.

Competences: Completing the course will allow students the efficient use of existing databases, creating meaningful bases for personal use and the free use of the information collected from the databases.

Prerequisites: Information technology, mathematics, computer programs

Course content: Match words with the pattern, regular expressions. Metrics. Measures of similarity between words and objects. String matching algorithms. Database storage structures. Database classification. Flat file database and relational database model. Database management systems. Database normalization. SQL - Structured Query Language. An object database - information. Importance of databases in bioinformatics.
