Semester: 2012/2013 summer
Name: Meteorology and climatology
Major: Environmental Protection
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 2
ECTS points: 3
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 9 / 18 / 0
Lecturer: Prof. dr hab. Marian Rojek, Dr hab. inż. Andrzej Żyromski prof. nadzw, dr inż. Małgorzata Biniak – P
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: After completing the course the student knows the physical processes occurring in Earth\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s atmosphere and in its contact with the surface. To do this student obtain the knowledge on the components of the heat and water balances, global warming, the causes of climate change and the local climate conditions and microclimate. He got to know the main features of the climate of Europe and Poland and the possibility of constructing the weather forecast on the basis of meteorological information and local weather forecasting.

Competences: After completing the course student is familiar with the basic principles of measurement methods and interpretation of weather and climate. Student knows how to determine the suitability of meteorological data to assess different phenomenons in the natural environment. He knows what methods have to be used in the interpretation of meteorological data from different time periods and is able to evaluate and interpret the relationship between meteorological data and phenological phases of the plants. He can apply that knowledge in practice and the project work.

Prerequisites: Basic of physics, biology and ecology

Course content: Earth’s atmosphere components. Greenhouse effect. Solar radiation balance. Physics quantities being characteristic of air temperature and humidity. Phase changes of water - condensation and evaporating. Clouds, falls and atmospheric deposits. Factors shaping the climate. Climate of Europe and Poland. Methods for microclimate conditions estimating. Passive and active microclimate land reclamation. Synoptic forecasts and local signals of the weather. Causes, results and consequences of climate changes in macro and micro scale. Scenarios of climate changes in global and local scale.
